fix(bulma-ui): make Rate, Icon, the time wheels, Autocomplete and Dropdown pass axe's ARIA checks - #979
Conversation
…roup
A radiogroup allows no aria-valuenow, aria-valuemin, aria-valuemax or
aria-valuetext, and axe flags them as critical. They go, and the value
travels with the radios instead. The star the value falls in is the
checked one, and a fractional value names it by the value ("3.5 stars").
Focus stays on the group, so the group points aria-activedescendant at the
checked star for a screen reader to announce as the keys change it.
Refs #942
Icon put aria-label="icon" on every container span, which axe flags as a prohibited name on a span with no role, and which named every decorative icon "icon": a Control's left icon, a Tabs icon, a Button's icon beside its text. With no ariaLabel the span now renders aria-hidden="true" and no name, so it adds nothing to the name of the control or text around it, and a Material ligature inside stays out of that name too. With an ariaLabel, or a non-empty native aria-label or aria-labelledby, the span renders role="img" beside its label, so the name is the label alone. An explicit role or aria-hidden still wins over either. The prop keeps its meaning when passed. What changes is the markup of an icon that never sets it, from aria-label="icon" to aria-hidden="true", and the role="img" beside a label. Every library component that renders an Icon without a label now gets a decorative one. Refs #942
…ow writes The bulma-classes codemod converted a .icon only when it set an aria-label, since Icon wrote aria-label="icon" otherwise. Icon now writes aria-hidden="true" on an icon with no name and role="img" on a named one, so the .icon entry takes the default that matches how the element names itself. A decorative .icon with aria-hidden converts, a named one needs role="img" beside its label, and one named by an expression needs both, since it may render with no name. The TODO says which. An icon .icon-text builds keeps aria-label under its own name in iconProps, because Icon reads an empty ariaLabel as no name and would drop the attribute. The fixtures' icons beside text are now decorative, as their text already names them, and the skill references follow. Refs #942
Each value a time wheel draws was a role="option" button inside a role="spinbutton", and an option belongs only in a listbox or group, which axe flags as critical. The spinbutton already states its value through aria-valuenow and aria-valuetext, so the items lose the option role and aria-selected and are hidden from assistive technology. They stay buttons, so a click still picks a value. Refs #942
The combobox had no aria-controls or aria-activedescendant, and its listbox had no name, both of which axe flags. The input now points aria-controls at the listbox and aria-activedescendant at the highlighted option, so a screen reader follows the arrow keys while focus stays in the input. The listbox is named by the label the label prop renders, and falls back to aria-label="Suggestions" inside an outer Field or with no label. aria-expanded now follows the list on screen, so it no longer reads true while a filter that matches nothing leaves no list to point at. Refs #942
The role="menu" held .dropdown-content with tabindex="-1", a focusable child that is not a menu item, which axe flags as critical. The tabindex moves to the menu itself, so a click between items, on a divider say, still keeps focus in the menu and the arrow keys still reach the items. A click there that closes the menu hands focus back to the trigger, as a click on an item does. Refs #942
…ites them lookup_bulma_classes told an agent to write a .icon's aria-label as ariaLabel in the props .icon-text builds its icons from. The codemod now keeps aria-label under its own name there, since Icon reads an empty ariaLabel as no name, so the lookup says the attributes keep their names. The test holding the lookup to the planner gives its icon aria-hidden, which is what Icon writes on an icon with no name, so that icon still converts. Refs #942

Row 3 is the thread the previous run on this commit posted before it was cancelled at the runner limit; it is counted here rather than posted again. The three threads from d2f341b (Rate, Icon, TimeWheels) are left to the verify pass and are not counted.
Overall: The change is sound and unusually well evidenced — every one of the five axe findings in #942 is answered at the right layer, and the two surfaces that modelled Icon's old default (the bulma-classes class map and lookup_bulma_classes) move with it in their own commits. I ran it rather than read it: bulma-ui 6777/6777 with 99.71% statements and 100% on Icon.tsx and Dropdown.tsx, bestax-migrate 2306/2306, bestax-mcp 313/313, both typecheck programs, all three staleness checks and all fifteen conformance rules clean. The riskiest part is Icon, because it is the only change whose blast radius is consumer markup rather than this repo's: look at finding 1 first (the role escape hatch covers one of the two signals that mean "not decoration"), then decide finding 2's release note.
Residual risk: ways aria-hidden / prohibited-ARIA could still occur in the executable paths this diff touches.
aria-hiddenon focusable content, viatabIndex— open, posted as finding 1.roleis the only opt-out;tabIndexreaches the span throughrestunfiltered, proved bybulma-classes-truth.test.ts:1117-1130rendering input and output identically withtabIndex: '0'.aria-hiddenon focusable content, via the wheel items — refuted as a new risk: the items keeptabIndex={-1}, butonMouseDownnow prevents the press from focusing them, and every path that ends without a click still lands focus on the wheel root (TimeWheels.tsx:631after a captured drag,:753on a click). A press that produces neither needs under 4 px of travel and a mouseup on a different element, which the item geometry rules out. The remaining programmatic focusability is the standing thread onTimeWheels.tsx:735.role="menu"still owning a non-menuitem — refuted:menu.querySelectorAll('[tabindex]')is asserted to be menuitems only (Dropdown.test.tsx:473-484), and the.dropdown-contentdiv is now roleless and unfocusable, which is the condition axe'saria-required-childrenrecurses through rather than reports. ThetabIndexthat moved onto the menu is not inside it.- Two radios sharing a name in
Rate— refuted by construction, not just by the 4.004 / 3.996 tests: the checked star takes the fractional name only whenshownValue % 1 !== 0, and every other star is named by its ordinal, so a fractional name can never collide with an ordinal one, and an integralshownValuereuses that star's own ordinal (Rate.tsx:482-484,:515-519). Abovemaxthe index clamps, so thearia-activedescendantIDREF always resolves. aria-activedescendantdangling inAutocomplete— refuted: it is gated onlistOpen && highlightedIndex >= 0 && highlightedIndex < filteredData.length(Autocomplete.tsx:465-470), and the "filtering leaves the highlight behind" test exercises the third clause.aria-controlsis the one that is not gated — finding 3.- The codemod diverging from
Iconon a.icon— refuted for the combinations reachable today:namingOftreats a bare attribute as a name, an empty string as none and an expression as unsure, which matchesIcon's!!test exactly, anddefaultsUnlessmirrors theroleescape hatch. The e2e truth suite now renders a named, a reference-named, an empty-named and a role-only.iconagainst its converted form and gets identical HTML. It will diverge the moment finding 1 is fixed withoutdefaultsUnlessfollowing, which is why that is in the finding. - Not covered by anything here: no
axe-coredependency exists in this repo, so every claim about what axe reports — including the author's Chromium check on the wheel items — rests on reasoning or on a run outside CI. Re-running the original smoke test against a closedAutocompleteand an<Icon tabIndex={0}>is the only thing that settles those two.
🏄 Five gnarly ARIA wipeouts, five clean rides — Rate hands its value to the star that earned it, Icon finally stops yelling "icon" at everybody, and the wheels quit pretending to be a listbox. Just one little shorebreak left: an icon with a
tabIndexand norolegoes invisible while it is still catchable. Patch that and this one is good to paddle out.
An unnamed Icon given a tabIndex but no role still took the decorative aria-hidden, so the span could take focus while hidden from assistive technology, which is a failure of its own. A tabIndex now keeps an unnamed icon out of that default the way a role already does, and the TSDoc and the Icon page say so. Refs #942
…own without aria-hidden Icon no longer hides an unnamed icon with a tabIndex, so the bulma-classes codemod no longer asks such a .icon for aria-hidden, the same as for a role. A tabIndex given as an expression may render as none, so it still asks. Refs #942

Overall: This pass settled threads and reviewed no commits. All six of my open threads are now resolved: five verified fixed against the current code at df24c067, and the sixth a reasoned deliberate choice from the PR author (admin) whose consumer-facing consequence the PR body now spells out. Checks run: the bulma-ui Rate/Icon/Autocomplete/TimeInput/Dropdown suites (414 tests) and the full bestax-migrate suite (54 suites, 2307 tests), both green — the latter after building bulma-ui/dist, which its render-truth e2e cases need.
Residual risk: none open from these threads.
- Rate —
checkedIndexand the label now read the same roundedshownValue, so the branch and the text it writes can no longer disagree; theit.eachatRate.test.tsx:617pins both sides of a whole-number boundary. - Icon — both escape hatches (
role, tabIndex) test forundefined, so a prop spread asundefinedstill yields a decorative icon, covered byIcon.test.tsx:694. Thebestax-migratedefaultsUnlessentry (class-map.ts:1795) plus its planner and render-truth cases keep the codemod from drifting from the component. - TimeWheels — focus-on-press is closed at the source, by the prevented default on
mousedown, rather than only repaired after the fact. Keeping the items as buttons rests on the axe 4.14 observation reported in the thread, which nothing in this repo can re-run. - Autocomplete —
aria-expanded,aria-controlsand the listbox element are all gated by the singlelistOpenexpression, so no third state can reintroduce a dangling IDREF.
🏄 Six threads paddled in, six paddled back out clean — five real fixes with tests behind them, and one honest yeah-that-one-is-on-purpose, dude. Nothing left bobbing in the lineup here.

Smoke-testing with axe, with each overlay open, turned up five places where the library's ARIA structure was invalid.
Rate's radiogroup carried
aria-valuenow,aria-valuemin,aria-valuemaxandaria-valuetext, which that role doesn't allow. They go, and the radios carry the value instead. The star the value falls in is the checked one, and a fractional value names it by the value ("3.5 stars"). Focus stays on the group, which now pointsaria-activedescendantat the checked star, so a screen reader announces it as the arrow keys change it. The Rate docs listed the removed attributes as a feature, and they now describe this instead.Icon put
aria-label="icon"on every container span. That is a prohibited name on a span with no role, and it named every decorative icon "icon": a Control's left icon, a Tabs icon, a Button's icon beside its text. This is an accessibility fix, not an API change. TheariaLabelprop keeps its meaning when it is passed. What changes is the rendered markup:ariaLabelnow rendersaria-hidden="true"and noaria-label, where it used to renderaria-label="icon".ariaLabel(or a non-empty nativearia-labeloraria-labelledby) now also rendersrole="img", so its name is the label alone and a Material Icons ligature inside never leaks into it.roleoraria-hiddenstill wins: an unnamed icon with a role or atabIndexof its own stays visible to assistive technology.<Button><Icon name="trash" /></Button>, was named "icon" and now has no name at all, so give the control its ownaria-label, as the icon-only button guide shows.Every library component that renders an Icon without a label (Control's left and right icons, Taginput, Tabs, Panel.Icon, IconText, Rate's icons, the Carousel arrows and the picker launchers) now gets a decorative icon. A consumer test that found an icon by the label "icon" will need another query.
The bestax-migrate bulma-classes codemod modelled Icon's old default, so it changes in the same PR. A
.iconnow converts when it sets what Icon would otherwise write:aria-hiddenwith no name, role="img"beside anaria-labeloraria-labelledby, and both when the name is an expression. The props it builds for an.icon-textkeeparia-labelunder its own name. The bestax-mcplookup_bulma_classestext and its agreement test follow. The time wheels rendered each value as a
role="option"button inside arole="spinbutton". The spinbutton already states its value, so the items lose the option role and are hidden from assistive technology. They are still buttons, so a click still picks a value.Autocomplete's combobox now points
aria-controlsat its listbox andaria-activedescendantat the highlighted option. The listbox is named by the label thelabelprop renders, and falls back to "Suggestions" inside an outer Field or with no label.aria-expandednow follows whether the list is on screen.Dropdown's
role="menu"held.dropdown-contentwithtabindex="-1", a focusable child that isn't a menu item. The tabindex moves to the menu itself, so a click between items still keeps focus in the menu and still hands it back to the trigger when the menu closes.Left out: naming Autocomplete's listbox from an outer Field's label, which depends on that Field label naming the combobox first (#939).
Merge note: this PR changes bulma-ui, bestax-migrate and bestax-mcp, each in its own scoped commit. A squash under this
fix(bulma-ui)title releases only bulma-ui, and the codemod and lookup changes would then ship with those packages' next releases. Merging with a merge commit, as #722 and #725 were, releases all three.pnpm allpasses locally.Fixes #942
